In the early hours of June 28, 1969, New York City police officers raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village. Police hauled patrons and employees from the bar, sparking outrage and a riot involving hundreds. Tired of the constant discrimination, neighborhood residents rioted for six days outside the bar on Cristopher Street, and turned Stonewall into the catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States. On the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots, June 28, 1970, thousands of people marched in New York City in America’s first gay pride parade, chanting, “Say it loud, gay is proud.”
